ABOUT ME

Nice to
meet you.

My name is Sara. I am an architect, former college athlete, mother of two silly, confident little ladies, and married to Kirkland firefighter Doug Tomczak, a man of many talents and endless hobbies.

Together we are always working on our house. Our children are accustomed to job sites, shuffling product samples, chats about 3D models, and when possible, part of the install team.

I love designing and working with people. Wrangling information to form a cohesive whole is my superpower.

Learning

Learning is fun! Every project and person offers opportunity to learn and grow from. I love listening and asking questions.

I value the input of trade professionals, and strive to understand the practicalities of their work and the impact it has on design cohesion. Similarly with suppliers, tapping into their wealth of experience adds value to the project process and helps shape decision making.

DIY Life

The division between my work life and home is occasionally indistinguishable. I’m regularly working on a project for our house just as I would for clients. At work, I leave the building to the professionals, but at home I’m part of the labor force.

Not only does performing the work foster appreciation for just how challenging it can be, it also offers insight into how material choices, construction techniques and assembly sequencing impact design.

I love that we are sharing our design/build process with our children. They are witness to our successes and failures, and learning along with us.

Biophilic Design

My niche passion in the design world is Biophilic Design. I love to talk about. My friend in grad school nicknamed me the biophiliac. Yes, mildly obsessed. What is it, you ask? Maybe you don’t have a name for it yet, but you innately practice the philosophy.

In summary, Biophilic Design principles aim to create environments that support human health, well-being, and productivity by integrating features such as natural light, vegetation, organic forms, views of nature, and natural materials. These elements are thought to reduce stress, enhance cognitive function, and promote overall happiness and satisfaction among occupants.

Simple concept, powerful influence.
